Fojol Bros. Of Merlindia – DC’s answer for Lunch Curry

7 Oct

Yaay ! Finally got to taste the Fojol Bros. of Merlindia in DC,  there’s nothing  like some “Curry in a Hurry “( I know most New Yorker’s know that restaurant in NYhttp://www.yelp.com/biz/curry-in-a-hurry-new-york).

So who are they? Here’s a quote from their About section

“On January 20th, 2009, the fojol bros. of Merlindia emerged from their home in the village of Adams Morgan and hit the streets of DC to share their family traditions with the world. They served food from their family truck and listened to and interacted with folks from all over the world. They watched with amazement as armies of people flooded DC on the day the world changed.”

 fojols

I follow them on Twitter and found out that today, they were  sitting up nearby and thought perfect they must have known I was craving some butter chicken. But  I was  skeptic because it sounded like it would a fake curry which tastes the same no matter its vegetarian or chicken,be bland and its from a truck?

And so the final verdict from today’s tasting of their “Dingo” size of Butter Chicken and Chicken Curry I am sold! It was soo000 good, flavorful, not too spicy but both curries had a distinct taste that my friends is when you know its good Indian Curry. And actually the fact they have that small size to get people to try for $2.00 is a brilliant marketing idea too.

Here’s the Website & twitter to find out where they will set up shop next! And you can even suggest where too.

Pranna

22 Feb

We have gone to many great restaurants in NYC and some of them you never forget. This is one of them – Pranna is a trendy Southeast  Asian restaurant in the Flatiron district with 15,000 sf of space! Space is king in NYC and this restaurant is amongst royalty.Last but not the least, the food - it is incredibly flavorful and elegantly served on modern plates.Try the satay’s which comes with all these incredible sauces that will blow your mind trying to figure what they are made of. I fell in love with the place and we even had the chance to meet one of the owners Payal Sharma, who was so nice and made sure everything was going well – its like your best friend making sure everything is going well.  Love this place!

Philly & NYC – favorite foods to go

9 Nov

We were travelling a lot between the East coast, visiting family & friends and attending lots of fun events & weddings. And this fall we have been home in Maryland for a past couple of weeks which has been great being home and checking out all the wonderful events in Washington, DC. But since its been awhile, I crave some favorites from both cities that we enjoy when we visit along the way. Especially tonight while we are waiting for the NFC East Matchup of the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. So here are some of my favorite foods on the go in two great cities that is close to our hearts.

Philly

The Philadelphia Cheesesteak -if you have no idea what it is let me tell you its one of the best comfort foods from Philly that has been often imitated but never duplicated. The classic cheesesteak is the long italian roll(It’s the bread- Amoroso’s Baking Company) thinly sliced juicy steak fried well, choice of cheese -Cheese Whiz/ American & Provolone and with or without onions.

The battle of two Famous Cheesesteaks accross the street from each other in South Philly, one being Pat’s King of Steaks founded in 1930 & Geno’s Steaks founded in 1966 has been around forever and I can’t pick between the two, hence I am including both as my choices. Here’s their websites for more information

pats-kingofsteaks        or           genos steaks

  http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/                              http://www.genosteaks.com/about.html

Now the best part is knowing how to order, because that is the key to keeping the lines going fast 24/7 at these two South Philly favorites.

Ordering Lingo

“Whiz, wit” – meaning Cheese Whiz with Onions

“I’d like a pepper whiz with” – meaning Cheese Whiz with peppers and onions

Want a different cheese replace Cheese Whiz with “Provolone wit”

Rita’s Ice  - with their “Ice Custard Happiness” tagline.

ritas

Founded in 1987 by Bob Tumolo and his mother and named the brand by his wife Rita. This is one of my favorites in the spring and summer, which has long lines around the outpost. But now they have year around locations and lately Ive seen them more and more all over the east coast which is great!

My usual order is Gelati which is vanilla creamy frozen custard with an Italian water ice flavor which I change every time I go to order.

Its way better than sherbet and has plenty of more options that are just as yummy as my favorite.

Italian Ice
Cream Ice
Misto®
Blendini™
Custard
Ritaccino™
Gelati
Slenderita™

NYC

kati roll

Kati Roll – is a street available fast food popular in Kolkata, India. It was started in New York City’s Greenwich village and has taken off to have another outpost in Midtown NYC and in London. What do they have on the menu? Its simple and easy to order to go, I would best describe it as a spicy Indian Burrito. The yummy snack consists of a soft paratha(Indian Flatbread different from Naan) rolled as a wrap with onions, spicy marinated choice of meat, potatoes, chicken, egg,Kebab or paneer as your filling served hot all for under $6 dollars. I personally wish we had one in DC, then I could get it all the time!

Check their website for more information.

 juniors cheesecake

Junior’s Cheesecake – In my opinion the BEST cheesecake ever! Founded in 1950 , it wasn’t called “The World’s Most Fabulous Cheesecake” for nothing. On a personal note,I had my first cheesecake when Jenson suprised me with a Juniors cheesecake for my birthday while we were dating from the original outpost in Brooklyn, NY. Ever since, at least once a year we always get a slice from their newer location near the Grand Central Station and the taste never changes.

Enjoy my selections!

This restaurant is one of my favorite places in New York City  for its simple sophisticated ambiance to its exotic flavors influenced by Vietnamese and French influences.  Also a great place for a quick bite or for a Sophisticated Happy Hr right in the Flatiron District.
