Kati Roll Semi – Homemade

16 Jun

I think by now everyone knows my obsession with the Kati Roll Company in NYC http://www.thekatirollcompany.com/. In hopes that someday they would decide to land a place in the Nation’s capitol. But since that has not happened, I have decided to take matters into my own hands for a temporary fix. Before we go any further, let me put a disclaimer that I am not the expert here since it’s not something I grew up on but it’s this is a pretty darn good interpretation for the everyday working professional.

Since the closest supermarket is Giant that where I decided to get most of my ingredients.

8 boneless, skinless chicken breast

2-3 Tablespoon Giant brand non-fat yogurt

Mission brand 8” Soft Taco Carb Balance Flour Tortillas

 Tiger Tiger  Tikka Paste  http://www.tigertiger.info/

Mint – Cilantro Chutney - I have both readymade versions in my fridge all the time but I’ve included the recipe to make from scratch too

1 White onion- I would prefer red onions but forgot to pick it up!

 Olive Oil

1 Can Amy’s organic red beans (Optional as a side dish)

 Ingredients

First take the chicken and chop it up into small cubes and then take 2 to 3 tablespoons of yogurt, add salt and add a couple of tablespoons of the Tikka paste till all the chicken is covered with the flavors.  You can always add some more  chili powder to make it spicier than the paste since it’s usually medium or mild that available in the local supermarkets. Cover the chicken and place it in the fridge for about an hr – 2 hrs so that the flavors soak in, the longer you leave it in the better it is. ( I had it marinate for an hr while I did errands).

Take the chicken and spray some oil on your baking dish so that they do not stick and leave it in the oven for about 400 degrees for 30 mins. During this time chop the onion and sauté them till they are soft and slightly browned with some olive oil. Check on your chicken so that it’s not too dry or under cooked then for the last 5 mins turn on your broiler and it will help crisp the surface of the chicken to mimic the grill. Ideally if you have a grill put it on skewers and it will be fantastic but if its rainy like it has been in the DC metro area or simply you don’t have one, baking is the only option.

Mint & Coriander/Cilantro Chutney – Whenever I’m at an Indian Grocery Store or  local grocery store in the International aisle, I stock up on this. It goes with a lot of things and can easily bring a lot of flavor with some fresh lemon juice or with yogurt or even with mayo. But if you have time or grow these plants in your backyard it’s easy to make too  – Here’s the recipe from a blogger love4cooking and from wiki how!

Last step, take your tortillas and heat them with some olive oil on a pan and then assemble them with Chicken, Chutney and Onions.

Grande Finale

Final Verdict, it was yummy not quiet really a Kati roll since I used tortillas, but it’s my version of Kati Roll in an American world.

Philly & NYC – favorite foods to go

9 Nov

We were travelling a lot between the East coast, visiting family & friends and attending lots of fun events & weddings. And this fall we have been home in Maryland for a past couple of weeks which has been great being home and checking out all the wonderful events in Washington, DC. But since its been awhile, I crave some favorites from both cities that we enjoy when we visit along the way. Especially tonight while we are waiting for the NFC East Matchup of the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. So here are some of my favorite foods on the go in two great cities that is close to our hearts.

Philly

The Philadelphia Cheesesteak -if you have no idea what it is let me tell you its one of the best comfort foods from Philly that has been often imitated but never duplicated. The classic cheesesteak is the long italian roll(It’s the bread- Amoroso’s Baking Company) thinly sliced juicy steak fried well, choice of cheese -Cheese Whiz/ American & Provolone and with or without onions.

The battle of two Famous Cheesesteaks accross the street from each other in South Philly, one being Pat’s King of Steaks founded in 1930 & Geno’s Steaks founded in 1966 has been around forever and I can’t pick between the two, hence I am including both as my choices. Here’s their websites for more information

pats-kingofsteaks        or           genos steaks

Now the best part is knowing how to order, because that is the key to keeping the lines going fast 24/7 at these two South Philly favorites.

Ordering Lingo

“Whiz, wit” – meaning Cheese Whiz with Onions

“I’d like a pepper whiz with” – meaning Cheese Whiz with peppers and onions

Want a different cheese replace Cheese Whiz with “Provolone wit”

Rita’s Ice  - with their “Ice Custard Happiness” tagline.

ritas

Founded in 1987 by Bob Tumolo and his mother and named the brand by his wife Rita. This is one of my favorites in the spring and summer, which has long lines around the outpost. But now they have year around locations and lately Ive seen them more and more all over the east coast which is great!

My usual order is Gelati which is vanilla creamy frozen custard with an Italian water ice flavor which I change every time I go to order.

Its way better than sherbet and has plenty of more options that are just as yummy as my favorite.

Italian Ice
Cream Ice
Misto®
Blendini™
Custard
Ritaccino™
Gelati
Slenderita™

NYC

kati roll

Kati Roll – is a street available fast food popular in Kolkata, India. It was started in New York City’s Greenwich village and has taken off to have another outpost in Midtown NYC and in London. What do they have on the menu? Its simple and easy to order to go, I would best describe it as a spicy Indian Burrito. The yummy snack consists of a soft paratha(Indian Flatbread different from Naan) rolled as a wrap with onions, spicy marinated choice of meat, potatoes, chicken, egg,Kebab or paneer as your filling served hot all for under $6 dollars. I personally wish we had one in DC, then I could get it all the time!

Check their website for more information.

 juniors cheesecake

Junior’s Cheesecake – In my opinion the BEST cheesecake ever! Founded in 1950 , it wasn’t called “The World’s Most Fabulous Cheesecake” for nothing. On a personal note,I had my first cheesecake when Jenson suprised me with a Juniors cheesecake for my birthday while we were dating from the original outpost in Brooklyn, NY. Ever since, at least once a year we always get a slice from their newer location near the Grand Central Station and the taste never changes.
